Latest report – November 2010

The top teams in the North Devon Netball League continue to shoot with great accuracy despite the weather! Carol Anne Trolls, Titans Apollo, Carol Anne Diamonds and Mole Valley Moltons each managed to surpass 50 yet again this week.  Division 1 also saw the Venners teams come through two very close matches in the final stages of the game.  Kathryn Parkyn lead Baby Vipers to a 2 goal victory over Titans Saturns and Carrie Short outwitted defenders to enable Vipers shooters to score an extra 4 goals than Carol Anne Pearls.

In division 2 Titans Venus found their form and kept title hopefuls Venners Misfits in sight throughout the game.  In the last quarter they came to life and kept the score level 27-27, when the final whistle blew.  Panthers and Coodes had a similar close game but Coodes could not quite do enough despite defender Louise Jollow’s best efforts.  Tamara Catlin kept netting goals to put Panther 1 ahead at the vital stage of the match: the end.

Reeds moved back to the top in division 3 beating Carol Anne Golds 34-24.  Sarah Pearce was shooting well to take her team far enough ahead at the start of the last quarter.  North Devon Homes Stars were given a tough initial challenge from Venners Bakery Pythons but they were able to settle and come through for an easy victory.  Similarly Chloe Crook’s shooting enabled North Devon Homes to beat Carol Anne Jets convincingly.

U16s

Carol Anne and Titans represented North Devon at the County U16s Netball tournament.  Both teams played well and placed second and third respectively.  Carol Anne started with a great win over Exeter B 36-6.  Accurate shooting by Laura Short and Grace Beal kept the goals flowing.  Meanwhile Titans faced Exeter A and although they started slowly they won the final quarter but this was not enough and they went down 10-21.

When the two North Devon teams faced each other Carol Anne started strongly winning the first quarter 5-3 but Titans came back to take the second quarter 2-0.  The low scores shows how strong both defensive units were.  Amber Manley and Beth Wilde were on form for Titans, while Issy Wilson-North, Rebecca Priest and Sarah-Jane Turner kept Carol Anne in the hunt.  The second half went Carol Anne’s way with tactical changes made to reduce the impact of Amber and Beth.  Carol Anne went on to win 14-8 and knew this secured their place in the regional league.

Titans played Exeter B in the final match and made hard work for themselves.  Knowing they should win this their error ridden game in the first half opened the door for Exeter but Titans firmly closed that opening in the second half and came through by 3 goals.  Jess Bennett and Chloe Knight kept a cool head and shot the crucial winners.

Exeter A were Carol Anne’s final opponents and they struggled to get to grips with their very tall shooters.  Mistakes on our centre passes gave a large early lead to Exeter and although Beccy Straker, Rosie Norton and Katie Straker worked tirelessly in the mid-court trying to bring the ball through to the shooters, they could not find their earlier form or flow and went down 8-36.  However they had done enough to take one of the two places in the Regional League next term.  Carol Anne’s U16s will now play against the best U16s in the region on Sundays in January, February and March.

The teams were:
Carol Anne: Issy Wilson-North, Rebecca Priest, Kathryn Parkyn, Katie Straker, Rebecca Straker, Rosie Norton, Sarah-Jane Turner, Grace Beal, Laura Short
Titans: Amber Manley, Beth Wilde, Frances Lausen, Leanna Fay, Amy Kingdon, Stephanie Batstone Jess Bennett, Chloe Knight.
